The Washington University Foreign Language Learning Colloquium Speaker Series presents Making implicit practices explicit: Developing reading comprehension strategy instruction in the English classroom

Lisbeth M. Brevik Associate Professor Department of Teacher Education and School Research University of Oslo, Norway

Workshop:

Making implicit practices explicit:

Developing reading comprehension strategy instruction in the English classroom.

Friday, October 5th, 10:00am  -   Location: Seigle 301

This workshop will address characteristics of strategy instruction and use in the English classroom. Considering findings from her own research and on her work with training teachers and instructors about strategies and reading, Lisbeth will examine the extent to which teachers might move beyond an implicit emphasis on reading strategies in their instruction, in order to help young people to develop as strategic readers necessary for becoming active and responsible participants in today’s society. Referring to classroom observations in situ and video observations of classroom instruction, participants will also be presented to the Protocol for Language Arts Teaching Observation (PLATO) to examine own reading instruction and how to profit from a detailed and systematic lens on own reading instruction.
